Virtual reality illustrating wall sections of permanent mural installation titled: “History of Chilean Mining Mural” at the University of Concepción, Chile. Section A (12.30MT x 3.15MT) concerns the history of Chilean mining from Pre Colombian period (c.2200 BC) to contemporary times. Section B (8.20MT x 4.20MT) illustrates mining process where the model of reference was the largest underground mine in the world “El Teniente”, copper mine which began its operations in 1905 with Braden Copper Company.

This project which had its genesis in 1998 under a common agreement between Chilean Bureau of Mines and the University of Concepción, was to establish a policy of projecting the image of Chile through out the world as a mining culture. Its first phase with the materialization of the mural at the University of Concepción was sponsored by El Teniente DivisionCODELCO-CHILE commemorating the centenary of Chilean large scale copper mining 1905-2005.

Realidad Virtual del Mural:

Realidad virtual ilustrando secciones del mural permanente titulado: “Mural Historia de la Minería Chilena” emplazado en la Universidad de Concepción, Chile. Sección A (12.30MT x 3.15MT) concierne la historia de la minería chilena desde el periodo Precolombino (c. 2200 AC) hasta tiempos contemporáneos. Sección B (8.20MT x 4.20MT) ilustra procesos mineros donde el modelo de referencia fue la mina subterránea más grande del mundo: “El Teniente”, mina de cobre que inicio sus operaciones en 1905 con Braden Copper Company.

Este proyecto que tuvo su génesis en 1998 bajo el común acuerdo del Ministerio de Minería y la Universidad de Concepción con el propósito de establecer una política de proyectar alrededor del mundo, la imagen de Chile como cultura minera. Su primera fase con la materialización del mural en la Universidad de Concepción, fue financiada por la División El Teniente de CODELCO-CHILE conmemorando el centenario de la gran minería en Chile 1905-2005.

Mural Anchoring System:

Mural modular system anchored with steel enamelled stretcher bars. The objective was to achieve a “floating effect” with a 5 mm shadow line between each panel. The overall shadow box type installation is to convey a pictorial space rather than an oversize picture frame, similar to the concept of Chinese lacquer screen painting or Japanese rice paper Shoji screens.

Sistema de Anclaje del Mural:

Sistema de anclaje modular del mural con bastidores de acero esmaltados. El objetivo fue crear un efecto de flotado con una línea de sombra de 5mm entre cada panel. Este tipo de instalación como cajas de sombra se vincula con la idea de un espacio pictórico, contrario a un cuadro pictórico sobre dimensionado. Este concepto es similar a los biombos chinos y las panderetas de papel de arroz japonesas.

From top to bottom the mural section illustrates more than 4.000 years of mining history in the Andean world, a distribution of 3 vertical panels (2.05 MT x 1.05 MT) in 6 rows divided into 6 sections as follows:

i.              Pre Colombian Period and the Bronze Age.

From top to bottom the mural section illustrates mining process where “El Teniente” copper mine near Rancagua, Chile. With a distribution of 4 vertical panels (2.05 MT x 1.05 MT) in 4 rows divided into 4 sections as follows:

i.              Sewell mining town and productive section.
ii.            Primary and secondary crushing plants.
iii.           Metallurgical process and extraction plants.
iv.            Smelting plant and final products.

Distribución General del Mural:

I.             Sección Histórica (12.30 MT x 3.15 MT):

Desde arriba hacia abajo el mural ilustra más de 4.000 años de historia minera en el mundo andino, con una distribución de 3 paneles verticales (2.05 MT x 1.05 MT) en 6 niveles alusivas a las siguientes 6 secciones:

i.              Periodo Precolombino y era del bronce.
ii.            Conquista española y la introducción de la era del hierro.
iii.           Periodo colonial y la independencia de Chile.
iv.            Revolución industrial y la industrialización de la minería.
v.             Surgimiento de la gran minería.
vi.            Desarrollo de las ciencias mineras.

II.            Sección Procesos Mineros (8.20 MT x 4.20 MT):

Desde arriba hacia abajo, las secciones ilustran procesos mineros vinculados a la mina El Teniente ubicada al oriente de Rancagua, Chile. Con una distribución de 4 panels verticales (2.05 MT x 1.05 MT) en 4 niveles alusivas a las siguientes 4 secciones:
